Artist Statement
As an artist, themes such as language, culture, and society have always interested me. I started developing my style to explore ideas of religion after I took an introduction to anthropology class. The questions that continually came back to me were “what would be lost” and “what will we keep” while learning more about anthropology.
I am a Hellenic Polytheist who worships Ancient Greek gods, spirits, and daimons. My work focuses on a modern representation of ancient concepts. I am inspired to revive cultural practices that no longer are prevalent in society, but can be similar to how we perceive the world. I am interested in how culture and religion carries on with the individuals who choose to keep it alive. Most importantly, I am interested in the blending of sacred items in different spaces, and how they transform the space to be sacred.
Artists such as Francisco Goya and Vincent Van Gogh inspire me regarding theme and stylistic choices. I find deep inspiration in topics such as different Ancient Greek deities, mythos and retellings, and important key figures in Aegean religious history such as the Oracle of Delphi. When choosing a topic to make art of, I utilize anthropological theory to understand and further research what I am trying to portray. While planning to create my pieces, I use a sense of intuition to choose a medium best fit to depict what I am trying to portray. The mediums I utilize most in my art are oil, acrylic, soft pastels, and charcoal.
